Shelf Styling in 2025

One of my most asked questions is how I style a shelf. I used to tell them when they asked that I would just put things on the shelf and move them around until I liked where they were. I have since paid more attention to what I am doing so that I can teach you how to style a shelf too. So, here you go!

Step 1: Gather your inspo.

This is important if you are wanting to be intentional about what is placed on your shelves and how it looks. This is where you are learning what your style is. You can gather inspiration from Pinterest, Instagram, google, or a combination of all of those places. When gathering your inspo, look for patterns. How full are the shelves? What kind of items are on the shelves? You can find some inspiration that I’ve gathered here on my Pinterest.

Step 2: Gather your decor

I like to have extra decorations available to me when styling my shelves especially when I am working with plants. So, grab what you would like to display on your shelves and lay it all out so that you can see everything. Start with gathering things that you already have. I don’t like to start with a shopping spree because you might get things that don’t actually work and this way, you can save some money.

Step 3: Largest items first

This is where you start to place your decor on the shelves. Start with your biggest items that are similar such as pictures. Place them in a zig-zag on your shelves to create some movement across all your shelves. See the image below as an example. Then go on to your next items such as plants or coffee table books. Again, placing them in a zig-zag throughout your shelves.

Step 4: Create your groups

Now that you have a general idea of where your decor is going to go, I like to make groups to create space so it feels less cluttered and more intentional. I will start with one big cluster in the middle on the top shelf and then work my way down the shelves. Following the zig-zag pattern from before. If I do one big cluster then I will do two or three smaller clusters as I go down the shelf depending on the size.

Step 5: Shop

This is where I take the time to shop around and find things to add to my shelves. I don’t rush this process because I want to add things that I love to my display and things that bring me joy. I keep in mind the colors that I already have on my shelves and the textures. I think about where it would go on my shelf and the size of the item that would look best in the space. This year, in my shopping, I plan to go to more antique shops and find things that are unique. If you find something that you absolutely love and would be happy to display on your shelves, I am here to give you permission to go for it! Let it bring you joy! If you saw something on my shelves you loved, you can shop by clicking the image below.

I hope that this was helpful! Feel free to follow along on Instagram and if you have questions, you can always send me a message and I am happy to help!
